Our effort to determine the largest property owners in Silicon Valley began with 309 MB of data — that’s more than half a million records — and a few challenges. The first was defining “Silicon Valley.” We limited ourselves to Santa Clara County, where many companies central to the region’s technology industry are based and where most of those companies originated.
A second challenge was to discover the true ownership of individual properties referred to in county assessor’s records only by the often-obscure names of limited-liability and holding corporations.
