Chick-fil-A opens in a former Santa Clara McDonald’s

Chick-fil-A has opened its latest Bay Area restaurant amid a big announcement on antibiotic-free chicken and an updated corporate policy on philanthropy.

The fast-casual fried-chicken sandwich chain took over a former McDonald’s in Santa Clara on El Camino Real near Scott Boulevard.

The expansion is the latest in the South Bay since the opening of a Chick-fil-A inside San Jose International Airport. That had sparked protests by the area’s LGBTQ community because of the restaurant foundation’s past financial support of groups opposed to LGBTQ causes.

On Nov. 18, the Chick-fil-A Foundation released a new charitable giving policy for 2020. While not addressing the LGBTQ issue, the foundation announced a new, limited focus: “Staying true to its mission of nourishing the potential in every child, the Chick-fil-A Foundation will deepen its giving to a smaller number of organizations working exclusively in the areas of education, homelessness and hunger,’ the foundation said in a statement. Those include Junior Achievement (education), Covenant House International (homelessness) and regional/local food banks (hunger).

A total of $9 million will be committed to those causes, the foundation said.

Also in November, the company announced it had met its goal of serving antibiotic-free chicken in all 2,400 U.S. locations. In 2014, the company had pledged to go “No Antibiotics Ever” by the end of 2019 — and along with its suppliers, “met the milestone early.”
