Edna’s eviction from SF firehouse enrages animal lovers online

Four or five years, especially in cat years, is a long time to call a place home.

For Edna, who was rescued as a stray kitten, that home has been San Francisco Fire Station 49 in the Bayview district. But after an anonymous complaint about the cat living near sterile medical supplies, the city said she had to go live someplace else. A viral social-media campaign — including the creation of Edna’s very own Instagram account — lobbied on the cat’s behalf. One fan site created on Webgramb quickly drew more than 32,000 followers. But it all failed to dissuade the city from moving forward with the eviction.

But on Monday, the day of the scheduled eviction, Edna reportedly got a new life of sorts when someone adopted her and gave her a new home. And the San Francisco Fire Department wrote in a statement that “we are happy to report that a member of the Ambulance Deployment Facility has volunteered to adopt the cat as a pet at home, where she will be well cared for.”

It remained unclear, however, whether the person adopting the cat was able to truly keep Edna for the longterm. Irene Ybarra, a former paramedic who had first taken Edna in at Station 49, told SFGate that “nobody adopted Edna, the person who took her home today has two dogs and two cats at home already so this is not the ideal situation. She is still working to try to figure out [where Edna will go].”

KPIX reported this week that the building where Edna has been living is “actually a staging and storage facility for department ambulances. Recently, an anonymous complaint was filed about the cat living in the warehouse among boxes of medical supplies. So, despite the objections of the paramedics, the department ordered Edna out.”

The city tried to defend itself in a statement that read, in part, “the workplace in question is not a Fire Station. This facility is the Department’s Ambulance Deployment Facility. Within this facility is Department Logistics, where medical supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals used by ambulance staff to provide crucial lifesaving emergency health care are housed.”

The argument didn’t do much to change people’s opinions about the eviction. KPIX interviewed nearby Bayview residents who, almost to a person, said let the cat stay put. Still, a city investigation found that “having the cat in the facility compromised the sterility of supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals used on patients. Public health and safety concerns counseled removal of the cat from the premises.”
