In 2000, George spoke to Billboard about the first remastered version of his now-multi-platinum triple album, All Issues Should Pass. The reissue arrived with five reward tracks, including an instrumental version of “What Is Existence.”

George reported on that unique edition, he wished “What Is Existence” to audio like The Beatles’ “Penny Lane.”

“When we were being heading by means of all the tapes, I just uncovered this version that was like a tough combine [at Trident Studios in London on August 9, 1970] on which I tried having this piccolo trumpet participant like the male who played on ‘Penny Lane.’

“It wasn’t in fact the very same bloke but I wanted that seem. So I experienced an oboe and a piccolo trumpet and I had this part for them all published out but they couldn’t enjoy it the exact same they could not do this this sort of ‘hush’ phrase, and they performed it pretty staccato like a classical participant.

“So I should have just recorded them on it, then rough blended it, and then ditched that. And as I was indicating before, most of it was stay. I hadn’t accomplished the vocal overdub due to the fact I’m enjoying the fuzz guitar component that goes all through the track.

“So all I could do on the [initial] consider was to give the band the cue line — the very first line of every single verse — and then go back to actively playing that riff. So that rough mix devoid of the vocal — I’d forgot all about it — was a novelty I uncovered.”

George wrote ‘What Is Life’ in about 15 minutes

In his 1980 memoir, I Me Mine, George wrote that he penned “What Is Life” in about 15 minutes.

“‘What Is Life’ was penned for Billy Preston in 1969,” George explained. “I wrote it extremely immediately, fifteen minutes or 50 % an hour probably, on my way to Olympic Studios, London, when I was creating one particular of his albums. Mainly because of the condition at the session it seemed way too difficult to go in there and say, ‘Hey I wrote this catchy pop tune,’ whilst Billy was enjoying his funky things.”
