OAKLAND — A Bay Area man is out on bail facing pending human trafficking charges, stemming from an August incident where the alleged victim was detained in Oakland, court records show.
Jimmy Ray, 23, was charged Monday with a single count of human trafficking of a minor, a felony. He was arrested in San Francisco last month and remains free after posting bail, according to court records.
Police said in court records that the investigation started at about 6:30 a.m. Aug 10, when they detained a teen girl on suspicion of prostitution on the 1700 block of East 15th Street. The girl reportedly denied that Ray was her pimp, but when investigators searched her phone, they found conversations related to sex work, according to a police probable cause statement.
In one conversation, the girl allegedly asked Ray if she could call it a night at 2:45 a.m. because she was cold, but Ray said she had to stay out until 3 a.m. In another conversation, they reportedly discussed setting up johns to be robbed, police claimed.
A judge signed an arrest warrant for Ray the following day, but he wasn’t arrested until Dec. 9, according to court records.
