Los Gatos community briefs for the week of Oct. 23

Celebrating a centennial

Celebrating a 100th birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic is a challenge, but friends and fans of Georgia Nelson did all they could to make it a special occasion.

Twenty members of the Pi Beta Phi alum club gathered outside her Los Gatos home recently with balloons, a banner, flowers, cards and a special performance by the Northwestern Cheerleaders, who did a pompon routine to the fight song of Nelson’s alma mater as the birthday girl sang along.

Nelson was presented with a box of 100 birthday cards from residents of Los Gatos and Saratoga, where she is a longtime Montalvo volunteer.

“I want to thank you for one of the most special days of my life,” Nelson told partygoers. “It was worth waiting 100 years to experience.

“You brought me great joy, and I want you to know how much I truly appreciate it. I will remember it all my life and after that as well!”

Turkey Trot’s hometown heroes

Those who register to run, walk or otherwise complete this year’s virtual Silicon Valley Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving will also be called upon to do good deeds in their community.

Registrants will be entered into the new Hometown Hero Challenge and tasked with completing as many as 25 good deeds, which they can track online. Complete 20 good deeds by race week, Nov. 21-29, to earn the title of Hometown Hero and get a prize.
