Motorcyclist killed, suspect arrested in Highway 84 fatal collision Sunday in Newark

NEWARK — A man who died early Sunday on Highway 84 when authorities said the motorcycle he was riding with another person was hit from behind by a suspected under the influence driver, was identified by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office Monday as  Michael D. Thomas, 40, of Palo Alto.

The other rider was also injured, the California Highway Patrol said.

The fatal collision happened at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of Highway 84 near Thornton Avenue.

Authorities said Thomas and another person were riding a motorcycle in the eastbound lanes when they were hit from behind by a BMW sedan.

Thomas died at the scene.  The other rider was taken to a hospital but their condition was not available.

The BMW was located nearby and the male driver arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, CHP Officer Dustin Kennerly said. Whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both has not been released.
