Palo Alto: Pursuit ends in arrest of 16-year-old robbery suspect

PALO ALTO – A 16-year-old East Palo Alto boy was arrested in connection with a strong-arm robbery in Palo Alto and an armed carjacking in East Palo Alto following a vehicle pursuit late Saturday, police said.

The episode unfolded just before midnight when an officer spotted a gray 2008 BMW 330i “driving at a high rate of speed” on East Bayshore Road in Palo Alto, south of Embarcadero Road, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a news release.

Police said the car had been stolen at gunpoint the previous night in East Palo Alto.

The driver did not pull over for officers and led them on a pursuit into East Palo Alto, police said. Five people ran from the BMW when it finally stopped on Clarke Avenue, just east of East Bayshore Road.

Officers, with the help of a police dog, arrested the driver on a nearby pedestrian footbridge about 12:05 a.m. Sunday. Police said the other occupants of the BMW escaped.

The driver, identified as a 16-year-old resident of East Palo Alto, matched the description of a suspect in a strong-arm robbery reported about 10:20 p.m. Friday on the 600 block of High Street in Palo Alto. The suspect ripped a woman’s clutch out of her hands as she was about to unlock the front door of her residence, police said.

One of the victim’s credit cards was used a short time later at the Shell gas station on University Avenue in East Palo Alto. Police said security camera footage of the person who used the credit card matched the description provided by the victim and the victim later confirmed he was the person who had robbed her of her clutch.
