Robbery suspects arrested in Fremont

FREMONT — Two Union City men have been arrested, one who was apprehended by a police K9 and the other who was spotted trying to hide by a San Jose police helicopter,  in at least two armed robberies, police said Tuesday.

The suspects were identified as Albert Balucan, 27, and Eduardo Garcia, 30.

Police said one of the robberies happened about 10:15 p.m. Monday at the Shell gas station in the 42000 block of Mission Boulevard.  Police said several suspects entered the gas station convenience store, pointed a gun at an employee and stole cash.

The suspects fled in an older red Dodge Caravan that officers were already searching for in connection with another armed robbery Sunday at the Fast and Eazy Mart, 34759 Ardenwood Blvd.

Police said the same vehicle was also involved in a series of thefts throughout Fremont.

Shortly after the Monday night robbery,  a K9 officer spotted the suspect vehicle as it fled on Stevenson Boulevard.  A short pursuit ensued until the Dodge  began driving recklessly. The pursuit was terminated but the suspected driver, later identified as Balucan, continued driving recklessly until he crashed at Stevenson Boulevard and  Fremont Boulevard, police said.

Balucan ran from the vehicle and was quickly apprehended by K9 Karo.  The suspect in the passenger seat, later identified as Garcia,  then got into  the driver’s seat and drove away from the area.  An alert community member later reported the van being abandoned at  Glenview and Mattos drives with the driver fleeing into the neighborhood.

Officers flooded the neighborhood and set a two-block perimeter around the affected areas.  A neighborhood search was conducted utilizing a Fremont police K9, a Fremont police drone, a  Union City police K9, and a helicopter from the San Jose Police Department. During the search, the SJPD helicopter located Garcia hiding in a yard on Mattos Drive.  The air unit directed the search team to the location of the suspect where he was arrested.

During the follow up investigation, a loaded firearm and BB gun were recovered along the vehicle  pursuit path, police said.

Balucan and  Garcia were arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, reckless evading, hit and run, and probation violations.  Both were being held  at Santa Rita Jail.

Fremont robbery detectives are currently working with outside agencies on other possible crimes involving the suspects.  Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to contact  Det. Jared Madsen at jmadsen@fremont.gov or 510-790-6900.
