San Francisco’s wildly popular Square Pie Guys coming to Oakland

Remember crossing the bridge for your cult favorite Detroit-style pizza? Those days are over.

Square Pie Guys, the San Francisco restaurant known for artisanal square pizzas and gluten-free fried chicken wings, is officially making a second home in Old Oakland.

This is the SoMa restaurant’s first location outside of San Francisco, and it will be in good company, surrounded by other buzz-worthy East Bay restaurants, including Oeste, Cosecha and District. Square Pie Guys is slated to open at 499 9th Street in early March.

According to a press release sent to the East Bay Times by co-owners Marc Schechter and Danny Stoller, this expansion allows them to broaden their reach and push forward their mission of being a modern pizza restaurant focused on improving the lives of their team, guests and neighbors.

“For us, this means that we will be partnering with local organizations that focus on job training and development for those who traditionally don’t have equal access to work opportunities,” the press release said.

The menu at the new Oakland location will be familiar to fans and include Square Pie Guys’ signature cheddar cheese-edge and mozzarella pizzas, including The 6 x 8 with red sauce and Pavone pepperonis; The Big Von with ricotta cream and Mike’s Hot Honey; and the new JLin Pie, a collaboration with basketball icon Jeremy Lin that includes lemon-garlic ricotta cream and Green Goddess Caesar. Yes, on the pizza.

The duo’s virtual Nashville-style hot chicken sandwich brand, Hetchy’s Hot, which launched at the beginning of the pandemic and is inspired by Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, will also make the trip across the bridge.
