MARTINEZ – A Contra Costa County coroner’s jury on Friday reached verdicts in separate cases involving a 42-year-old Antioch man who was found dead in a cell at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond and a 32-year-old Pittsburg man who died after being injured in a fight at the Martinez Detention Facility, authorities said.
On the evening of Oct. 17, 2020, a sheriff’s deputy found Gregory Lane Lynds, the Antioch man, in a cell with a bedsheet wrapped around his neck, this news organization previously reported. Lynds received emergency medical care but died at the jail.
“The finding of the jury is that the death is a suicide,” the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Lynds was arrested and booked into jail earlier that month on charges of elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon and battery on a peace officer, as well as a parole violation.
The second case involved Levele Lee Williams, who was injured in a fight at the Martinez Detention Facility on Sept. 24, 2020. This news organization previously reported Williams developed complications during surgery to repair a broken jaw and died at the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
“The finding of the jury is that the death is at the hands of another person, other than by accident,” the sheriff’s office said.
