So Meghan Markle’s shy, reclusive 73-year-old father was struck with a serious health crisis, had to undergo heart surgery near his home in Mexico and won’t be able to fly to England and walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding Saturday to Prince Harry.
In obvious ways, having a key player drop out at the last minute should cause a logistical nightmare for what is designed to be a carefully orchestrated, globally televised show of British royal pomp and tradition. Questions now swirl around who can take Thomas Markle’s place in that father-of-the-bride role. Most outlets, as well as British bettors, put the odds on Doria Ragland, Meghan’s yoga instructor mother from Los Angeles, being asked to step in and assume that responsibility.
But why does Meghan Markle need anyone to do the duty of “giving” her away? Why can’t she walk herself down the aisle? Why can’t she give herself away?

After all, she’s a 36-year-old adult woman. And it’s 2018.
As we all know, Meghan has done very well making her own way in life, presumably supporting herself financially along the way. She engineered her rise from a middle-class San Fernando Valley upbringing — and being the child of divorce and of an apparently dysfunctional family — to landing a starring role on a TV show. She then did whatever it took, including taking up worthy humanitarian causes, to earn a place in the sorts of high-society circles where she could meet a prince of England.
Through all this, Meghan has celebrated being a feminist and has championed women’s rights.
So, wouldn’t she find archaic the assumption that she needs someone to walk her down the aisle? Wouldn’t she balk at the idea that she belongs to whoever it is who would be in the position of “giving her away?”
If she needs to look for inspiration for bucking these wedding assumptions, she should look to another strong, independent 21st century woman who opted to walk herself down the aisle — and at the last minute. That woman is her good friend, tennis legend Serena Williams.

Vogue magazine reports that Williams received a text from her father Richard an hour before her November 2017 marriage to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Like Thomas Markle, Williams’ father also had been dealing with health problems. He apologized but said he just wasn’t feeling up to the task: “I’m not myself anymore,” he texted, according to Vogue. “I’m just too nervous.”
Williams immediately texted her father back to assure him she loved him and was fine if he couldn’t be in the wedding. “Maybe a lot of daughters wouldn’t react the same way, but I know the struggles he’s had these last few years,” she told Vogue.
And with that, “the greatest female athlete of all time walked down the aisle alone,” Vogue wrote. Williams …read more
