Woman ID’d after fatal plunge of Highway 1

DAVENPORT — A 40-year-old woman who died Monday after reportedly either falling or jumping from a Highway 1 cliff has been identified by the Santa Cruz County Coroner’s Office.

Wendy Edwards, of Santa Cruz, reportedly was driving northbound on Highway 1 on Monday morning when she rear-ended another driver, retired Santa Cruz big-wave surfer Darryl “Flea” Virostko, near Upper Swanton Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the two drivers pulled off the road after the crash before Edwards allegedly walked toward the cliff overlooking the ocean and either fell or jumped off the side of the several-hundred-foot cliff. Edwards’ body was recovered from the ocean by U.S. Coast Guard helicopter.
