‘Not the time to relax’ on preventative measures, school district warns
SALT LAKE CITY — Three Canyons School District high schools — Alta, Brighton and Corner Canyon — will return to on-campus, in-person learning on Monday.
In letters to parents and guardians, the school district notes the shift from virtual to in-person learning “signals a significant decline in the number of confirmed cases associated with the school.”
Active cases among Alta, Brighton and Corner Canyon students and employees have fallen well below the 15-per-school threshold that would have triggered further discussions about extra mitigation strategies per Canyons’ guidelines, the letter states
However, the letters also caution “this is not the time to relax” on mitigation steps, particularly as the school district observes fall break on Oct. 15 and 16.
The letters note Utah Gov. Gary Herbert’s announcement of the state’s new COVID-19 transmission index and tightened restrictions on social gatherings.
“Under the new guidance, which calls upon Utahns to wear masks in public indoor settings and outdoors when physical distancing is not possible, Salt Lake County is identified as an area with a high level of transmission.”
For more information about the index, visit coronavirus.utah.gov.
“Gatherings or outings without masks or physical distancing increase the chances of COVID-19 taking hold again in the school community,” the school district website states.
All Canyons District schools, including Alta, Brighton and Corner Canyon, have four days of classroom learning each week with Fridays reserved for remote or independent learning.
All three schools temporarily shifted to online learning due to rising numbers of COVID-19 cases associated with the schools and the communities they serve.
