SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City fire crews battled a large fire at a downtown gas station Friday morning.

The fire was reported about 9 a.m. at the intersection of 1700 South and 900 West. Salt Lake Fire Capt. Anthony Burton said it is believed that propane tanks in the rear of the building were involved. A huge plume of black smoke from the fire could be seen across the valley.

What started the fire was not immediately known. The gas pumps where cars get their fuel were turned off, he said.

As of 9:45 a.m., no injuries had been reported. Burton said the gas station would likely be a total loss. Roads in the area were expected to remain closed for several hours.

This story will be updated as additional information becomes available.
