Democratic congressman Rep. Adriano Espaillat of New York announced he had tested positive for COVID-19 one day after he spoke in favor of impeachment on the US House floor.

“I am following guidance from my physician and quarantining at home after having tested positive for COVID-19,” Espaillat tweeted on January 14. “I received the second dose of the #COVID19vaccine last week and understand the affects take time. I have continued to be tested regularly, wear my mask and follow the recommended guidelines.”

So far, four Democratic members of Congress, including Espallait, and two spouses of members have tested positive for COVID-19 in the week following the January 6 insurrection on the Capitol.

Over 100 members were sheltered in a secure indoor location in the Capitol while law enforcement worked to quell the insurrection and clear the Capitol — an ideal environment for COVID-19 to spread.

Footage of the secure location posted by Punchbowl News showed several Republicans, Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, and Michael Cloud of Texas, gathering together talking without masks and refusing to put them on when explicitly asked to do so.

On January 6, an Espaillat spokesperson told Patch’s Nick Garber that he had been “moved to a safe location at the direction of Capitol Police.” It is unclear if he was in the same secure location as the other members.

Espaillat was pictured wearing a K-N95 mask on January 6 itself and a surgical mask while speaking on the House floor.
