Letter: Hostility and rudeness of San Jose NIMBY is shocking

NIMBY’s seem to think
‘homeless’ are ‘criminals’

Re: “Homeless housing proposal at old supermarket site sparks concern” (Mercurynews.com, May 1):

I attended the meeting at the Northside Community Center on April 30 when People Assisting The Homeless — commonly referred to as PATH — presented information about its proposal to build as many as 100 apartments for homeless housing at the defunct Dick’s Supermarket site at Fourth Street and East Younger Avenue in San Jose.

I was surprised by the hostility and rudeness from a large number of people there who repeatedly interrupted the presentation and answers to questions written on cards from the audience. Those who kept yelling questions and demands seemed uninterested in hearing information. They seemed intent on expressing their bias that “the homeless” are “criminals” and therefore the project was unwanted.

The irony is that if the project is built its renters will no longer be homeless. I’m guessing that each of the vociferous NIMBY’s had a place to go home. They just didn’t want the same for others.
