Letter: Why evict homeless from Hope Village — a model homeless camp?

Evicting homeless in
model camp a shame

Re: “Tent village for homeless gets eviction notice” (Page A1, Sept. 12):

What a shame for the city of San Jose, Santa Clara County and the State of California to declare eviction of this Hope Village organized privately with clean tents, portable toilets and garbage collection.

This is a real model for a temporary homeless solution. Built on a long-empty parking lot which has not been in use for years, the land is Employment Development Department land. This department evidently had not thought to make use of the land until it saw something good being done with it.

The residents have been given 72 hours to vacate by the CHP. The city, the county and the state should hide their heads in shame!
