49ers mailbag: Why so few snaps for Dante Pettis, Solomon Thomas?

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Being embedded with the 49ers here in northeast Ohio offers time on an off day to catch up on fans’ questions submitted via my Twitter and Instagram:

What is the deal with Pettis? Is his injury worse than the team believed or lead on or is he in the doghouse? Both? (@ClellandChad)

Kyle Shanahan expressed surprise that Pettis played just two snaps, and Shanahan vowed it would not happen again. Pettis’ groin issue limited his practice reps the past two weeks, but it is not an overriding factor in his benching, not when Shanahan preferred Marquise Goodwin and Deebo Samuel as his Week 1 starters. Pettis’ two snaps produced one catch (7 yards). Goodwin’s 50 snaps yielded one catch (7 yards). Curiosity abounds for Sunday’s encore at the Bengals.

Why didn’t the team go back to Santa Clara? (@brandon.pride)

They’re in Ohio to save travel time and bond between back-to-back road games. It worked early in the 2011 and ’12 (playoff) seasons, and so far they’re 1-0. They’re staying at a humble hotel with little around it other than a couple chain restaurants (and Handles ice cream). Several 49ers spent Tuesday visiting a hospital, an elementary school and an Easterseals event.

How worried are you about Jimmy Garoppolo? (@ll415)

On a scale of 1 to 10, put me down for a 2. He knows the offense, and he needs time to acclimate after a year rehabbing his knee, which didn’t exactly look nimble strapped in a brace. But he’s a confident leader for an offense that needs more play makers than just George Kittle.

Any chance we bring in a running back from outside the organization? (@familyguy702)

I’m bucking on Jeff Wilson’s promotion to serve as the third running back, a move likely not happening until Saturday, so whoever they cut (perhaps tight end Kaden Smith) can perhaps take Wilson’s spot on the practice squad. Alfred Morris, last year’s September pickup, is available after the Cowboys cut him Saturday but I don’t envision a 49ers return.

Do you think we will make a trade for Melvin Gordon? (@JW30000)

Doubtful. They can summon Wilson to complement Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert while Tevin Coleman recovers in the coming weeks (rather than go on injured reserve). Gordon wants a sizeable contract that the Chargers won’t give him and one the 49ers shouldn’t pay unless another injury makes them desparate.

Any word yet on Coleman? (@bigantlers)

High ankle sprain. It surely will keep him out Sunday at Cincy, perhaps until after they return from their bye and host the Browns on Oct. 7. Nick Bosa’s high-ankle sprain kept him out three weeks and he’s still sore.

What was Kyle’s thinking on the 57-yard FG attempt? Confidence in Gould? Confidence in D? Seems like that situation was exactly why you draft Wishnowsky, to pin them deep. (@the_ag_fox_1971)

Your guess(es) are as good as mine. Attempting a 57-yarder amid Tampa’s heat seemed a lot tougher than a 58-yarder inside the temperature-controlled Superdome, the latter of which Will Lutz made to win New Orleans’ opener.
