49ers mailbag: Will the line be able to protect Jimmy G?

SANTA CLARA — Opening week of the 49ers season merits a top-20, question-and-answer session via my Instagram and Twitter handles:

1. Will Dee Ford and Nick Bosa practice this week? (@stephenlounsbury3)

Indeed. For the first time since the first week of training camp, Ford and Bosa practiced Monday, a positive sign that the edge-rushing saviors should suit up Sunday and get after Tampa Bay’s Jameis Winston.

2. Starters Sunday: Tarvarius Moore or Jimmie Ward? Jason Verrett or Ahkello Witherspoon? (@gamerollerb)

If we can base anything off exhibition action, look for Ward to start at free safety but slide up to nickel back with Moore replacing him at safety in multiple-receiver sets, presuming K’Waun Williams isn’t full-go at nickel back. Verrett returned to practice Monday after a three-week hiatus, and Witherspoon seems more likely to start .

3. Expected spilt between the RBs? (@greg_boone13)

A job-share indeed is predicted for Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman. If one is to emerge as the workhorse, I’d bet it’s Breida, who’s too fast and too familiar with this offense to linger on the sideline, if healthy, which he says he is. Read more on this topic in the coming days.

4. Should the clock start ticking on John Lynch? (@Shivasirons)

No more than it’s ticking for Kyle Shanahan, who has 53-man roster control and handpicked Lynch as his GM. The urgency to win is real. I think both are safe into the 2020 season, barring another September-October flop.

5. Will the 1 PM start time West Coast time be a significant help in the Tampa Bay game? (@4GenSFFanFam)

Actually it’s 1:25 p.m. PT, and the significance is that the 49ers’ body clocks won’t have to wake up for what usually is a 10 a.m. PT start on East Coast kickoffs. Afternoon thundershowers are a Tampa staple, and Hurricane Dorian may have a lingering impact, so the 49ers better be ready for wet, humid conditions after sleeping in Sunday.

6.Do you think it’s possible somewhere down the line we see Nick Mullens starting and Jimmy G being traded? (@antgreen7483)

The 49ers are all-in on Garoppolo, financially, emotionally, strategically, fanatically. If his comeback goes askew with another injury this season, that is likely the only way Mullens makes it onto the field. Down the line, like 2020 or 2021, you never know but it would take a spectacular collapse and likely a new coaching staff.

7. Do you see the Niners picking up another safety or wide receiver? (@_carlos2o9_)

Antone Exum, who’s been on and off the 49ers roster since 2017, came back Sunday as a fourth safety. He filled the
