8 Colorado prep football games to watch in Week 3

Class 5A
No. 3 Valor Christian (1-1) at No. 8 Pomona (1-1)

When/where: 7:30 p.m. Friday at NAAC Stadium

Last meeting: Valor Christian 14, Pomona 6, on Sept. 7, 2018

What: There won’t be more Division I talent on one Colorado high school football field this weekend than there will be at North Area Athletic Complex on Friday night. That includes two of the state’s best offensive linemen in Valor’s Roger Rosengarten and Pomona’s Alex Karas. Valor is coming off its first loss of the Ed McCaffrey era — a 27-17 defeat that saw Georgia’s Cedar Grove score 20 unanswered fourth-quarter points — while Pomona is looking to reassert its place among the 5A elite after a Week 1 loss to Regis.

Fountain-Fort Carson (1-1) at No. 1 Columbine (2-0)

When/where: 4 p.m. Friday at Jeffco Stadium

Last meeting: Columbine 49, Fountain-Fort Carson 6, on Sept. 7, 2018

What: Through two weeks, nobody has come close to stopping the Rebels, who racked up 356 yards in just 22 offensive plays in a 42-3 victory over Ponderosa last week. If Fountain-Fort Carson can control the ball with its electric running back Q Jones, perhaps the Trojans can at least slow the Rebels down. Of course, that’s easier said than done against a Columbine defense that has surrendered just three points in two games.

No. 2 Cherry Creek (2-0) at Mullen (2-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday at Mullen

Last meeting: Cherry Creek 35, Mullen 8, on Sept. 7, 2018

What: The Mustangs step up in class after a pair of blowout wins over Far Northeast (34-0) and Doherty (44-17). If they are a true 5A title contender, a win over the Bruins would certainly prove it. In the trenches, a face-off between Division I recruits could emerge with Notre Dame-bound DT Aidan Keanaaina lining up opposite CU Buffs OL commit Carson Lee.

Class 4A
Brighton (2-0) at No. 6 Chatfield (1-1)

When/where: 6 p.m. Thursday at Chatfield

Last meeting: Chatfield 39, Brighton 30, on Sept. 7, 2018

What: A rematch of last year’s barn burner in Brighton features one of 4A’s most productive running backs in Chargers senior Malcolm Boyd, owner of back-to-back 100-yard outings to begin the season. Facing a defense that hasn’t surrendered a point in the past six quarters, he’ll have to earn every inch he gets Thursday night.

No. 8 Ponderosa (0-2) at No. 10 Windsor (1-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday at Windsor

Last meeting: Ponderosa 17, Windsor 13, on Sept. 7, 2018

What: After losing to a pair of 5A powers, including top-ranked Columbine, the Mustangs finally get to pick on someone their own size. Not that the Wizards are pushovers. Senior RBs Tyler Shields (243 yards) and Wyett Ekeler (102) will put the Mustang run defense to the test after averaging 11.1 yards per carry in last week’s win over Vista Ridge.

Class 3A
No. 4 Green Mountain (1-0) at No. 2 Palisade (1-0)

When/where: 7 p.m. Friday at Ralph Stocker Stadium

Last meeting: Palisade 42, Green Mountain 26, on Sept. 7, 2018

What: A year removed from a surprise 3A state playoff appearance, the Rams have a chance to make a …read more
