Gruden, who signed a 10-year, $100 million contract to leave Monday Night Football’s booth and coach the Raiders again, will no doubt face an adoring crowd in his first appearance as Oakland’s coach since 2001.

As for the action on the field, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr won’t see much action in the opener, neither will running back Marshawn Lynch nor many other starters. The real competition will be for backup roles, led by quarterbacks E.J. Manuel and Connor Cook vying for the No. 2 quarterback job.

Among the new Raiders to keep an eye on will be offensive tackle Kolton Miller, their first-round pick from UCLA who’ll start for injured Donald Penn at left tackle. The Raiders and their fans will also watch with keen interest some of their young defensive linemen, including Maurice Hurst, D.J. Hall and Arden Key.
Speaking of Raiders defensive linemen, this will be the first of what will likely be four missed preseason games for All-Pro Khalil Mack, who is holding out in hopes of getting a new contract.

The Lions will also be starting a new era with former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia coaching his first game for Detroit.
