Dominican outfielder Pedro Pineda is expected to sign with the Oakland A’s when the international signing period begins Friday, according to reports.
Pineda, who turned 17 in September, has been linked to the A’s since the summer of 2019 as a member of the 2020 international draft class — the draft, typically held in the summer, was pushed to the winter of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Pineda is expected to sign for $4 million, and will enter the A’s top-heavy farm system as one of the most promising young prospects.
On their international draft big board, Baseball America ranked Pineda as its top prospect last year.
Pedro Pineda is a power/speed threat from the Dominican.
He expected to sign with the @Athletics as the top-paid player in the 2020 international class in July, per @BenBadler.

In bringing in Pineda for millions, Oakland is taking a gamble on the clear power and speed upside. Baseball America ranks Pineda as one of its best prospects because, “he’s a strong, athletic, physical center fielder with a loud tool set and a power/speed threat. He’s a center fielder with excellent speed, a fast bat and the power potential to hit 25-plus home runs.”

Like any teenage prospect, Pineda still has huge gaps to close in his plate approach and discipline.
Pineda will join fellow top international prospect, infielder Robert Puason, 18, as another top international prospect in the A’s system. Puason is the No. 2 overall prospect in the A’s system.
