Rockies add Colton Welker to 40-man roster; Riley Pint not protected from Rule 5 Draft

The Rockies shuffled their 40-man roster Friday, making moves to protect several prospects from next month’s Rule 5 Draft.

Right-handed pitcher Riley Pint, the fourth overall draft pick in 2016, was not added to the 40-man roster but it’s doubtful that a team will select him in the draft on Dec. 10. The Rockies added infielder/outfielder Bret Boswell, infielder Colton Welker and left-handed pitchers Lucas Gilbreath and Helcris Olivares to the 40-man. To make room, right-handed pitchers Ashton Goudeau and Jesus Tinoco were designated for assignment. Tinoco was part of the 2015 trade that sent shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto.

Pint, 23, has struggled with control problems and has not pitched above low-A Asheville. He has raw talent, and he pitched for the Rockies this fall in the Arizona Instructional League. But it would be risky for another big-league team to draft Pint because his new team would to not only have to place him directly on its 40-man roster but it would also have to carry him on the major league roster throughout the 2021 season. Pint is not ready for that big jump in competition.

If that player doesn’t stay on the MLB roster for the full season, he must be offered back to his former team for $50,000.
