Rockies Insider: Padres’ mega-deal with Fernando Tatis Jr. another sign that Colorado is way behind in NL West

The Rockies Insider.

A couple of weeks after the Rockies traded Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals for basically a bag of peanuts, the Padres again reminded Colorado of their scrub status within the National League West.

While Colorado paid the Cardinals $51 million to take a future Hall of Famer off its hands, San Diego locked up its franchise player, shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., with a 14-year, $340 million contract extension. The deal essentially keeps the 22-year-old in San Diego for the entirety of his career.

Say what you want about the smarts of signing any player to that long of a deal — that is a debate for the Friar Faithful to have over the next decade-plus. The fact is, San Diego is going all in, while the Rockies take the cheap, cowardly route toward what could very well be the franchise’s first 100-loss season. Colorado is also likely to trade off its best player (all-star shortstop Trevor Story) along the way.

Consider Fangraphs’ preseason playoff odds. The Rockies are given a 0.2% chance to make the postseason, the lowest odds in the majors outside of the Orioles. And Colorado has a 0.0% chance to win the division and a matching 0.0% chance to win the World Series.

While the Dodgers re-loaded for a title repeat (signed reigning NL Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer, re-signed third baseman Justin Turner) and the Padres made a flurry of moves (Tatis plus trades for aces Yu Darvish, Blake Snell), the Rockies front office is left pushing pipe dreams that the team can actually compete against those two divisional powers, much less the rest of the NL.

Denver secures Gold Pan for second-straight season

It’s going to be another long summer in LoDo. And as if the ineptitude at 20th and Blake needed another underscore, Tatis’ mega-contract (the third-biggest deal in MLB history) is it.
