What the 49ers are saying after loss to the Saints

The 49ers head into their bye week on a negative note after losing their third straight game, falling 27-13 to the Saints on Sunday in New Orleans.

The Niners jumped out to a 10-0 start, but the Saints scored 17 second-quarter points to take a lead into halftime. New Orleans eventually scored 27 straight points, capitalizing on the 49ers’ turnovers to win the game.

Here’s what the 49ers (4-6) had to say after the loss:

Head coach Kyle Shanahan

On how disheartening it was to squander a hot start: “It was. I thought we had an opportunity today, big time. We should have had the lead going into second half. Couldn’t get anything going in the second half. Didn’t get much out of run game today and those turnovers are what killed us.”
“We had two interceptions in the red zone and our special teams has to be better than that from a turnover standpoint. … Not close to good enough.”

On the Saints’ run defense:
“They’re one of the top teams (against) the run. With our backs banged up throughout the game and going into the game, we knew it’d be a challenge to run the ball today. I tried to make us balanced as long as I could. Wish we got a few bigger runs with the 25 carries we had.”

On turnovers undoing upset their bid:
“We all knew we had to play some real good football coming into today. I was real impressed with the guys how hard they were going for it. But if you don’t get the turnovers fixed, it doesn’t matter what our situation is.
“I look at our four wins and we’re plus-5 or plus-8 in turnovers. In our six losses, we’re like minus-10. I know we’re missing some people. If we took care of the ball better, we would have been in the game. But we didn’t and we blew an opportunity there.”

Justinian Jessup in CU Buffs’ black-and-gold? It wasn’t meant to be.

On what officials said of the Street roughing penalty:
“That’s just how he saw it. He said he thought he saw it and got some agreement from the refs around him. They said he drove him into the ground and landed on him.”

On the muffed punts and if balls got lost in vision of dome ceiling:
“I don’t think so. Trent fair caught it and let it go. He didn’t tell me he didn’t see it and I think he should have caught it. Richie had that and just dropped it at the end.”

On why Aiyuk does not return punts:
“He’s been out trying to get healthy. Trying to get him started at receiver first. But it’s definitely something we have to after what happened today.”

On Mullens going out for one play:
“He was hurting on that play, checked him out and was better after. … They brought the nickel a bunch. They did a real good job of blitzing and got us a couple times.”

On how bad the 49ers need the bye:
“I just want to get more time for guys to come back to start with. With an …read more
