Sony’s PlayStation 5 launches on November 12, but inventory remains limited — here’s how to find one

Sony’s PlayStation 5 will launch on November 12 with a standard edition priced at $500, and a digital edition with no disc drive priced at $400. Preorders have been appearing at various retailers, but inventory is limited. On release day, Walmart will allow shoppers to order PS5 consoles online on a rolling basis at 12 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. ET, and 9 p.m. ET.

Sony confirmed the new console’s price during a September showcase event that also included gameplay trailers for upcoming titles, like “Spider-Man: Miles Morales,” “Final Fantasy XVI,” and “Resident Evil: Village.” Other confirmed PlayStation 5 titles include “Gran Turismo 7” and “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.”

The PlayStation 5 will be available first in North America, Japan, Mexico, Austrailia, New Zealand, and South Korea, followed by a worldwide launch on November 19.

Sony’s console will compete with two new Xbox models for the affection of gamers throughout the 2020 holiday season. Microsoft’ $300 Xbox Series S and $500 Xbox Series X are available now, but inventory is low.

PlayStation 5 stock continues to pop up at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and other major retailers when available. GameStop said more standard PS5 consoles will be sold in stores during its Black Friday sale later this month. We’ll continue to update this post as stock becomes available at other stores.

PlayStation 5 price and release date

The PlayStation 5 will be released on November 12 in two different models — one that has a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray drive and a “digital edition” with no disc drive at all. The standard model is priced at $500, and the digital edition is priced at $400. While the digital edition is $100 cheaper, you might need to use your PlayStation 4 discs to claim the PlayStation 5 versions of those games later on.

Several stores, including Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart have started preorders, but quantities are limited. Some people on social media have reported being able to preorder the console in person at GameStop stores.
