The race to develop self-driving cars has attracted a slew of investments from venture capitalists hoping to find the next breakout startup. According to Pitchbook, VC firms have invested a total of $40 billion into companies developing automated-driving technology since 2000.

The upside could be massive, with one research firm predicting the autonomous-vehicle market will grow to $550 billion by 2026.

Insider looked at data compiled by Pitchbook to determine which VC firms have been the most active investors in the autonomous-vehicle world. 

Below are the 12 VC firms that have made the greatest number of investments in companies that are developing automated-driving technology. Pitchbook’s data includes investments in firms whose primary business lies outside of autonomy, like Nio and Lyft, that are also working on automated-driving tech.
